ILikeNicePeople writes "Another classic email we received from a friend about making the best of each day.
Here's the story:
The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it's the quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable.
A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the garage with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the morning paper in the other. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it:
I turned the dial up into the phone portion of the band on my ham radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning swap net. Along the way, I came across an older sounding chap, with a tremendous signal and a golden voice. You know the kind; he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business. He was telling whom-ever he was talking with something about 'a thousand marbles.' I was intrigued and stopped to listen to what he had to say
'Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you're busy with your job. I'm sure they pay you well but it's a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet. It's too bad you missed your daughter's 'dance recital' he continued. 'Let me tell you something that has helped me keep my own priorities.' And that's when he began to explain his theory of a 'thousand marbles.'

Jerry's Ride #16 : A New Friend's Perspective- Evansville to Guntersville
ILikeNicePeople writes "As many of you know we have been following Vietnam Veteran Jerry Nelson as he travels around the country on a bicycle to raise awareness and money for Veterans assistance programs. On his journey he has met some incredibly NICE people who have helped him along the way. This latest story was sent in by Julie, a wonderful friend in Evansville, IN who drove him from Evansville to Guntersville, AL for free...just to help out a new friend who inspired her and her husband through their meeting.
From Julie in Evansville... I wish I could remember all the things Jerry asked that I share. I am
still learning my way around on your website, but please know that you
may post any information you like where I am concerned. My music is
available for downloads on numerous sites including itunes and www.CDBaby.com
. CDBaby is my primary contact regarding my music these days. I've
kept a fairly low profile over the past few years and have not promoted
the music the way I should, so am very grateful for all your kindness.
A lot of information, sound clips and lyrics can all be accessed at www.jrschembre.com.
In
the meantime, I stay busy with local veteran activities and fundraisers
for Journey's transplant. This tiny twin had been growing
progressively worse since last November when it was discovered she
would need a liver. I have been helping the family with fundraising
activities and more are in the planning stages. We hope to post more
pictures of Journey in the near future, but her struggle has been an
amazing story all by itself! She received her new liver just 11 days
ago! The medical bills and cost to the family are HUGE, so we will be
working on their behalf for a while to come. More on Journey can be
found on the website www.COTA.org.
This is an amazing organization that works diligently on behalf of
children needing life-saving transplants. The "nice" folks at COTA
were a great blessing.
And now, the latest, as you know -
Jerry returned to Evansville following his decision to accept the
position at Koininia and the incident in Hannibal. My husband, always
the comic, greeted Jerry with, "Hi Dude! I hear you're going out for
the Olympic swim team!" I had hoped to give him the space to rest and
recover while back in Evansville, but it was not meant to be. He found
a nice space in the office of "Bible Fellowship and Veteran's Memorial
Chapel" and promptly placed his sleeping bag on the floor to sleep,
even though there was a big cozy couch available to him. What I didn't
know until it was time to leave was that each evening when we went to
turn in, while I was sound asleep, my husband Danny and another
neighbor would invite Jerry out for late night conversations around a
campfire. They, apparantly, stayed up until the wee hours, telling
jokes, talking about life, love and wonderful women! Jerry mentioned
he was treated to a rare midnight mini-concert by Danny. He plays
flute and saxophone and rarely pulls out the horns when he is not
working. It was a special moment. Be sure to ask him about it. He
didn't sleep much in Evansville!
We left for Guntersville on
Thursday, taking our time by car. Jerry noted how strange it seemed to
be covering 50 miles in such a short time when it would take him a
day's ride to travel as far. We stopped by Fort Campbell, in
Clarksville Tennessee, home of the 101st Airborn. He was able to get a
couple of pictures there, before the next leg.

Jerry's Ride #15 : Nice People Helping Me Back To Guntersville
ILikeNicePeople writes "Jerry sent us his latest update from the road. For those of you who are new to Jerry's Ride....Jerry Nelson is a Vietnam Veteran who has been traveling around America on a bicycle since November to promote awareness for struggling Veterans who suffer as a result of their involvement in conlict. If you would like to read all of his Nice stories you can CLICK HERE to start on story #1.
Back to Guntersville (In Jerry's words).... This posting may seem a little out of order, and I guess it is. But there's a reason. After the pond in Hannibal, the wind got taken out of my sails just a might and I've been lax in updating.
The other reason I'm starting frm this end...once I made the hard decision to turn and head south, my decision seemed to be confirmed by two great folks who came along.
Sam, a trucker with Luckie Trucking in Illinois gave me a lift all the way to Evansville and then Julie in Evansville gave me a lift all the way to Guntersville! Together these two great folks saved me about two weeks of pedaling! (More about Sam and Julie in upcoming updates).
But their kindness is not without precedence. As Julie and I were heading down 431 South yesterday from Huntsville to Guntersville, my mind kept returning to the day a couple of months ago when Charlie Wood gave me a lift from Guntersville to Huntsville so that I could keep a scheduled speaking date.
But Charlie did more than just give me a lift. Guntersville is one of the few towns on the trip that I've actually dreaded leaving. The folks at Post 8 in Guntersville have just been super and i feel I've made some life long friends there.
Charlie gave me some kind words of guidance and advice and I've had plenty of opportunity to return again and again to the words he said as I made my way slowly northward.
So I guess you've figured out by now, I'm back in Guntersville. Just kind of hanging out and relaxing some...saving up some energy for the big push back to Americus.
When will I be leaving? Haven't really set a firm date yet. I don't have to be in Americus until June 2nd but I want to get there about May 30th or so.
Well, I've just been told breakfast is ready, so I'll close this part out now, wolf down some eggs and will be updating again soon!

Nice News: Nice Charity of the Week: Make a Wish Foundation
ILikeNicePeople writes "This is another one of our favorite charitable organizations...The Make a Wish Foundation.
This awesome charity fulfills important "wishes" for children aged 2 1/2-18 who have been diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition. Truly heartwarming stories are created when the Make a Wish Foundation and it's 25,000 + volunteers get involved.
When a child becomes eligible the Make a Wish team visits the child and finds out the child's one true wish. The team then works towards making the wish come true for the child. On the website wish.org you can read about some of the past wishes granted on their wish stories page. The stories are very inspirational and very moving when you consider the creativity of the child synergized with the committment of the team of wish granters and volunteers to make it happen. Entire communities can become positively affected by the impact of this organization's mission to help children with medical conditions, not just the one child whose wish gets granted.
We encourage you to get involved with the Make a Wish Foundation in some way. You can volunteer or donate money, gifts, treasures, and even frequent flyer miles!! You can also organize fundraisers to generate donations. There are several opportunities available for supporting this wonderful organization. You can be a part of helping make dreams come true. What an honor!
You can also refer a child if you know of someone who may qualify for and benefit from wish being fulfilled.
You can find out much more about the Make a Wish Foundation by visiting their website at http://www.wish.org.
